Greensboro Historical Scavenger Hunt!

Get ready to explore Greensboro’s rich past! This scavenger hunt will take you to some of the most fascinating historical sites in our city. Put on your walking shoes, grab your phone for taking pictures, and prepare for a journey through time!

Instructions:

  • Visit each location listed below.

  • For each location, complete the clue and take a picture to prove you were there.

  • Have fun and learn something new!

Let the Hunt Begin!

1. The International Civil Rights Center & Museum (121 East Sycamore Street)

  • Clue: This location marks the site of a pivotal sit-in that ignited a movement. Find the monument dedicated to the four young men. What is their names? (Take a picture of yourself with the monument.)

  • Challenge: Write down one lesson the Civil Rights Movement has taught us.

2. Greensboro History Museum (130 Summit Avenue)

  • Clue: Step inside and discover the history of Greensboro. Find an exhibit dedicated to the “Old Mill.” What product did the Old Mill produce? (Take a picture of the exhibit.)

  • Challenge: Locate the historic trolley car. How many passengers can it hold?

3. Blandwood Mansion (447 West Washington Street)

  • Clue: This stately mansion, a Greensboro landmark, was once home to a prominent North Carolina Governor. Find the information about the mansion’s architectural style and how many rooms it has. (Take a picture of yourself in front of the mansion.)

  • Challenge: What is the name of the prominent Governor who lived there?

4. Greensboro City Hall (300 West Washington Street)

  • Clue: In front of this building, you’ll find a memorial dedicated to those who served in the armed forces. What war is the memorial dedicated to? (Take a picture of yourself with the memorial.)

  • Challenge: How many floors does City Hall have?

5. First Presbyterian Church (215 North Church Street)

  • Clue: Established in 1826, this church has a long history. Find the oldest part of the church building. (Take a picture of yourself in front of the oldest part of the building.)

  • Challenge: What is the name of the church’s founder?

6. Guilford Courthouse National Military Park (2332 New Garden Road)

  • Clue: This park is the site of a significant Revolutionary War battle. Find the monument dedicated to General Nathanael Greene. Read the inscription on the base and write down what the American forces almost did to defeat the British. (Take a picture of yourself with the monument.)

  • Challenge: What is the name of the British commander defeated here?

7. Greensboro Cultural Center (200 North Davie Street)

  • Clue: This building blends art, community, and history. Find the plaque dedicated to the Greensboro War Memorial. (Take a picture of yourself with the plaque.)

  • Challenge: What are the types of art featured at the Greensboro Cultural Center?

8. Weatherspoon Art Museum (University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 500 Spartan Trail)

  • Clue: Though not directly historical, art often reflects the times. Visit this museum and find a painting or sculpture that you think conveys a sense of history (either by its subject matter or its style). Take a picture with the artwork and describe what the piece means to you.

  • Challenge: What are the museum’s hours of operation?

Bonus Challenge!

  • Find a historic marker or plaque in Greensboro that is not listed above. Take a picture of it and write down what it commemorates.
